Since 1997 700-800 people are diagnosed HIV positive each year. In Germany 2,800 new HIV infections were reported in 2008. A rising trend. At the end of 2008 around 63,500 germans carried the HIV virus in their blood, at that time around 10,500 were suffering from related incurable illnesses. In Austria 505 new cases were reported in 2008, an increase from 1994 to 2006 where less than 500 new cases a year were diagnosed. In 2006: almost 42% of new infections were through hetrosexual contact (compared to 27% in 1998); 28.6 percent through homosexual conact, 20.5% through intravenous drug use.

The introduction of ART medication in all 3 countries in 1997 has reduced the number of deaths through AIDS. Nethertheless 100 of every 200 AIDS patients die each year. The number of people living with HIV infection continues to rise in Switzerland, as in other countries, each year. At present there are approximately 25,000 people infected with HIV living in Switzerland (conservative estimation from UNAIDS/WHO).
